Prompting Gemini

Engineering the prompts you provide Gemini can help you receive more helpful and specific responses. Consider using the CRAFT method. And you may need to iterate: you won’t always get the response you are hoping for the first time.

Using NotebookLM

NotebookLM, included with Gemini, can be a great tool for helping you summarize and interact with course readings and dense, jargon-heavy research. You can “chat” about the materials you have uploaded to NotebookLM, and even create a short podcast about them! Please remember, however, that these tools are no replacement for actual engagement with the original source, since AI summaries can miss important information, generate misinformation, and shortcut the important intellectual growth that happens when engaging directly with the materials. Like Wikipedia, use it as a first step, not a final destination.

Academic Integrity

Please be sure to read and understand Notre Dame’s policy around Gen AI before using Gemini. Please also be sure to read and understand the specific policies and guidelines around Gen AI in each of your classes, which may differ from course to course depending on the specific learning goals. If you’re unclear about the policies, we encourage you to seek clarity from your instructor.

Disclosure/Transparency

Different classes or places of employment may require different forms of disclosure or citation of Gen AI technologies. It is your responsibility to know what is expected of you; if you are unsure, we encourage you to provide a disclosure statement that indicates what tools you used and how you used them and provides at least one example of a prompt you used.

Responsibility

At the end of the day, remember that you are responsible for your use of Gen AI. That means you are accountable both for verifying the validity of the information Gen AI provides to you and for evaluating the ethicality of your engagement with these tools in alignment with University and classroom policies.
