Description
Google AI Studio is an AI-powered development tool that allows developers to prototype, iterate, and build custom applications using natural language. At the University of Notre Dame, access to this tool is managed to ensure data security and compliance with university policies.
๐ Current Access Status
Google AI Studio is currently in limited access for members of the Notre Dame community.
-
For Academic or ND Use: Access is granted on a case-by-case basis. To discuss your specific needs and request activation for your ND account, please contact the OIT AI Enablement team.
-
For Personal Projects: If you are working on non-ND related projects, we recommend using Google AI Studio with a personal (non-ND) Google account.
๐ ๏ธ What is Google AI Studio?
Google AI Studio is a fast, web-based prototyping environment for developers. Key features include:
-
Rapid Prototyping: Use natural language to describe and build custom web or mobile apps.
-
Gemini API Integration: Easily test and refine prompts for Googleโs most capable AI models (Gemini).
-
Code Generation: Export your work into code snippets to use in your own development environment.
๐ Deployment and Production
At this time, there is no supported path to production for applications built within Google AI Studio at Notre Dame.
-
Development Only: AI Studio should be viewed as a development IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for prototyping.
-
Infrastructure Requirements: Transitioning to a production environment requires extensive configuration within the Google Enterprise Cloud, including paid billing accounts and API access tiers that are not currently available for general deployment.
-
Support: The OIT does not currently support the publishing or hosting of applications made via Google AI Studio.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get access?
We enable Google AI Studio and the Gemini API for specific users upon request. Please reach out to the OIT AI Enablement team with a brief description of your intended project or research goals.
Can I connect my own application to the Gemini API?
Yes, we can provide access to Google AI Studio to generate a Gemini API key on the Free Tier. However, because this tier is not covered by our enterprise data protection agreements, you must:
-
Only use Public Data.
-
Adhere to the Free Tier rate limits.
-
Acknowledge that there is no current path to scale these keys for production use.
Why can't I deploy my app yet?
While an app is in development in Google AI Studio, you my share the app with other people who have access to Google AI Studio. This offers limited functional sharing within teams but may not be used to distribute widely.
Full deployment requires a suite of enterprise-level cloud services (including paid API tiers and specific security configurations) that are still being evaluated for the University's Google infrastructure.
