If you use ChatGPT for Notre Dame business, enroll in ChatGPT EDU. ChatGPT EDU is Notre Dame's licensed ChatGPT workspace. It adds data protections that personal ChatGPT accounts don't have, plus premium features:
- The latest OpenAI models
- Advanced voice mode, and uploads for spreadsheets, PDFs, and other files
- Custom GPTs, projects, and connected apps for streamlined workflows
- ChatGPT Work, an agent that can complete multi-step tasks for you (see below)
Faculty and staff can request a ChatGPT EDU license with the license request form. Licenses are billed yearly; the 2026 cost is $260 per user, and a valid FOAPAL is required.

ChatGPT Work is here
ChatGPT Work is now available in Notre Dame's ChatGPT EDU workspace. Instead of answering one question at a time, Work takes a goal, plans the steps, and carries them out across your files, connected apps, and the web. It can deliver finished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. In the ChatGPT desktop app, it can also work in folders on your computer.
Because Work acts on your behalf, it brings new risks, such as hidden instructions in web pages or files, and actions you can't undo. Read our guide before you turn it loose on real work.

Your account determines what data you can use
The data you may enter into ChatGPT depends on which account you're signed in to. Only Notre Dame's ChatGPT EDU workspace is approved for university data.

Key Security Guidelines

Personal accounts (Free, Plus, Pro): Conversations may be used to train OpenAI's models. Never enter internal, sensitive, or FERPA-protected Notre Dame data.
- Recommended: Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in your data controls.
- Check your workspace: Before you enter university data, confirm you're in the Notre Dame EDU workspace, not a personal account.
- Integrations: ChatGPT EDU connects to many tools, and some aren't approved for Sensitive data. Confirm every connected app is approved for your data before you use it.
- Browser extensions: Don't use browser extensions that claim to integrate with ChatGPT. They're built independently and may be malicious.
FERPA & Sensitive Data
- FERPA approved: ChatGPT EDU is approved for student education records covered by FERPA. Share only what the task needs, and use it for legitimate educational purposes.
- Keep sharing inside Notre Dame: Don't share chats, projects, or custom GPTs that contain student records or Sensitive data outside the people who need them.
- Highly Sensitive data is not approved in any ChatGPT account.
- Agents and ChatGPT Work: The same data rules apply when ChatGPT acts for you. Read Desktop Agents before you connect folders or apps.
