Are we really living in a post-truth society? A decade ago, the term “post-truth” was chosen as the word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries. Studies of social media have shown that information-sharing behavior is rarely modified by concerns regarding the accuracy of the information being shared. With the proliferation of online misinformation/disinformation, how is an online audience meant to determine the accuracy of scientific information they encounter on the web?
In this workshop, scientific literacy meets information literacy. The workshop will use examples drawn from health, medicine, and environmental science to explore the problem of STEM misinformation.
